Keeping pig records: DEFRA guidance for England

DEFRA's guidance explains that pig keepers in England must keep a holding register recording movements of pigs onto and off their holding or premises. This also applies to pigs kept as pets.

  • Update movement records within 36 hours. Include the herd mark or marks, the number of pigs with each herd mark, and details of the holding they came from or are going to.
  • Record individual identification where required. This includes pigs moved to exhibitions or shows, artificial insemination centres or other breeding locations, or countries outside Great Britain.
  • Take an annual inventory. Once a year, record the number of pigs on the holding that day and the total number normally kept there.
  • Keep records available. The guidance says to retain records for 3 years after you stop keeping pigs and show them to a field officer if requested.

A holding register can be kept on paper or electronically, provided it contains the required information and a copy can be supplied to a field officer. Keeping a written register does not replace the separate requirement to report pig movements.
