Keeping VAT records
Clear, up-to-date records make it easier to review the VAT you charge on sales and pay on purchases. Keep copies of sales invoices, purchase invoices and any credit or debit notes alongside your bookkeeping records, so you can trace entries back to the original documents.
HMRC requires VAT records to be kept for at least six years, or ten years if you use the VAT One Stop Shop (OSS) scheme or used the Mini One Stop Shop (MOSS) scheme.
Making Tax Digital: Unless exempt, VAT-registered businesses must keep certain VAT records digitally and use compatible software. This book provides a supporting handwritten record; it does not replace required digital records or VAT return software.
For full requirements and exceptions, see HMRC guidance on keeping VAT records.
