July 2026 code update

The Department for Education updated Working together to improve school attendance on 9 July 2026 with technical clarifications. For schools in England, refer to Chapter 8 for the national attendance and absence codes and their conditions of use. Codes are not all single letters: examples include C1, C2, J1 and Y1–Y7. Illness is recorded under I; medical or dental appointment leave is recorded under M.

This S028 paper register retains its existing layout: name rows, month, year and class fields, and numbered day columns from 1 to 31. It has no dedicated printed code-key or reason-for-absence field. Use it as a supplementary paper record alongside your school's official electronic register; Chapter 8 requires the official attendance register to be kept electronically. This description update does not change the book's physical format or claim DfE approval or legal compliance.

The DfE's Monitor your school attendance user guide explains that the monitoring tool uses data from school management information systems, not paper registers. Check the current guidance when choosing codes and recording supporting details.
